Chapter Eleven

It was clear to Kendall over the next couple of days that Tarek was still angry with her. She could tell in the way he barely spoke to her or looked at her. He didn’t even try to have sex with her. She should have been relieved about that instead of feeling somewhat disgruntled.

She disliked how confused he left her feeling, and she further disliked there was a hint of guilt that she hadn’t told him before, which was insane. Not only did she not owe him anything, revealing the existence of the vaccine would have been a betrayal to her people.

Though she was emotionally conflicted about the situation with Tarek, she didn’t allow it to keep her from slipping out the first opportunity she had. It had taken her at least a day to feel completely recovered from the electric shocks, and it took another two days for her to have an opportunity to sneak out.

She arrived at Fort Glacier almost an hour after she’d left Tarek’s quarters, gaining admittance to find her mother and Brody waiting for her on the other side when she stepped into the base. She forgot about her mission for the moment, rushing to hug them. Tears scorched her eyes, and she allowed herself a second to just enjoy the embrace of her family before clearing her throat and taking a step back. “I don’t have long, but they know about the vaccine.”

Her mother’s eyes closed for a moment, and she sighed heavily. “I was afraid that might happen.”

Kendall couldn’t help feeling defensive as she crossed her arms over her chest. “I didn’t tell them anything. They discovered it when they forced me to undergo a medical exam.”

Her mom’s eyes widened. “Honey, I wasn’t accusing you of anything. I just anticipated this might happen somehow.”

She breathed out a sigh of relief. “I’m sorry if I snapped at you.”

“I think you’re allowed a little leeway, since you’re under so much stress.” Eliza reached up and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “How are you holding up?”

That was a complicated question with an even more complicated answer, and Kendall settled for shrugging. “I’ll survive.” She hoped anyway. She didn’t mention Tarek’s anger or attempt to get answers from her using his tray of interrogation tools. It wasn’t just to spare her mom and Brody the knowledge of what she might go through. She was afraid if they learned how severe the incident had been, they might forbid her to return.

She couldn’t have that. Her mission dictated she must return, though she was less optimistic about finding anything useful than she had been the last time she reported in. Tarek was still too guarded, and she didn’t have access to the most sensitive information she really needed.

“It’s over now,” said Brody. “You aren’t going back.”

She arched her brow at his tone. “You aren’t trying to tell me what to do, are you, Brody?” She wouldn’t put up with that. She had to endure enough
